When picking Golden Globe winners, the key is to always remember, the Hollywood Foreign Press always sways towards new stars/shows. When in doubt pick the newbie.
Best Motion Picture: The Shape of Water. Recent bias prevails here The Shape of Water beats out the equally worthy Call Me By Your Name and Dunkirk because of it’s later release
Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy: Lady Bird. Lady Bird has the advantage of being the drama in the musical or comedy category. It wins cause it seems so deep and complex for a comedy when really it’s a drama.
Best Leading Actress- Drama: Frances McDormand. McDormand has never won a Golden Globe even with nominations for amazing performances in Fargo and Almost Famous. This is a toss-up between her and Sally Hawkins, I’m not choosing the new star as much as I betting with that the HFP will take the chance to finally give McDormand a rightfully deserved Golden Globe they should have given her years ago.
Best Leading Actor- Drama: Gary Oldman. This one is a runaway for Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour, his performance as Winston Churchill is perhaps the most talked about role of the award season. Best Leading Actress- Comedy: Saoirse Ronan. There’s no way Ronan doesn’t get rewarded for her performances in Lady Bird but this is again Lady Bird being in the comedy category getting in the way of another winner as Margot Robbie would have nabbed this honor
Best Leading Actor- Comedy: James Franco. Every fiber of my being wants to say the HFP will go with a new star and give the Globe to Daniel Kaluuya for Get Out, but Hollywood loves movies about Hollywood and James Franco just brought one of the most bizarre Hollywood figured to the big screen in a big way.
Best Supporting Actress: Allison Janney. I, Tonya is one of those films that falls in the right film, wrong year category. Janney nabs their only award.
Best Supporting Actor: Sam Rockwell. Rockwell stoles the show in Three Billboards, enough said.
Best Director: Christopher Nolan: Dunkirk was everything filmmaking should be, Nolan made us feel like we were there. We simultaneously couldn’t believe what we were watching was just a film while also being to recognize all the filmmaking decisions Nolan made that too many high budget films today lack (like not bloating the runtime).
Best Screenplay: Lady Bird: Lady Bird continues to dominate, move along.
Best Animated Film: Coco. Disney’s decision to saddle Coco with the disastrous Olaf short won’t take away from the fact that it’s Pixar’s most heartwarming and complete story in years.
Best Television Series- Drama: This Is Us. Read this slowly and carefully, Game of Thrones is the best show on tv….but it won’t win. The Hollywood Foreign Press won’t miss this opportunity to crown This Is Us as the new it show.
Best Comedy Series- Comedy: Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. One of the more interesting categories this year, a couple newcomers, a couple established shows, and a reboot. There really isn’t a powerhouse comedy so the newcomer show is another safe bet here.
Best Actress Drama Series: Claire Foy. I don’t know if Claire Foy is the best actress on tv (streaming) but she’s in her second year of giving the best performance on tv. Foy continues to add to her trophy case and it won’t be her last.
Best Actor Drama Series: Sterling K Brown. Liev Schreiber deserves to eventually win for Ray Donovan, Bob Odenkirk deserves to win for Better Call Saul but they both run into the buzz saw that is Sterling K Brown and This Is Us.
Best Actress Comedy Series: Rachel Brosnahan. The Hollywood Foreign Press will crown Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as the best new comedy and in doing so they will also honor its star, Brosnahan.
Best Actor Comedy Series: Aziz Ansari. A great collection of actors here, Ansari ascends as the best leading comedy actor in tv today outside of Andy Samberg who 100% deserves to be nominated.
